Pitt Adds Transfer QB Joey Yellen

PITTSBURGH—Pitt head football coach Pat Narduzzi has announced the addition of mid-year transfer quarterback Joey Yellen, who played this past fall at Arizona State.
Yellen has already enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh and will participate in spring drills.
As a freshman for the Sun Devils, Yellen played in one contest, preserving a redshirt. It is anticipated that, per NCAA transfer guidelines, he will sit out the 2020 season and be ready for active duty in 2021 as a redshirt sophomore.
"Joey's recruitment happened incredibly fast," Narduzzi said. "(Offensive coordinator) Mark Whipple made contact with him immediately after he went into the portal in mid-December. Joey wanted to be enrolled for the upcoming semester so we basically did an unofficial visit over FaceTime since it was a dead period. Even in that tight window, everyone did their homework. I know Joey is excited to be at Pitt and we're thrilled to get a great person and quarterback."
Yellen's lone appearance for the Sun Devils was a Nov. 9 starting assignment against USC. He completed 64% of his passes (28 of 44) for 292 yards and four touchdowns with two interceptions in a 31-26 setback to the Trojans. He posted those impressive numbers despite suffering a shoulder injury early in the contest.
As a two-year starter at Mission Viejo (Calif.) High School, Yellen achieved a 22-3 record (.880) while completing 61% of his passes (360 of 595) for 6,131 yards and 57 touchdowns against just 14 interceptions.
As a senior, he completed 227-of-351 passes (65%) for 3,516 yards and 27 touchdowns, earning an invitation to the prestigious Under Armour All-American Game.
Pitt returns 16 starters from an 8-5 team that capped the season with a 34-30 Quick Lane Bowl victory over Eastern Michigan. Under Narduzzi's direction, the Panthers have won 36 games, the most by a Pitt head coach over his initial five seasons since Jackie Sherrill's tenure from 1977-81.
