Panthers Travel To Virginia Tech This Weekend

PITTSBURGH – For the first of two straight weekends, the Pitt track and field team will be heading down to Blacksburg, Va. to compete in the Virginia Tech Invitational. The Panthers will take on multiple ACC schools starting on Friday and running through Saturday afternoon inside the Rector Field House on the Virginia Tech campus.

- There will be a total of 12 teams competing in the Virginia Tech Invitational. The teams competing this weekend are Virginia Tech, Virginia, Wake Forest, VCU, North Carolina, UNC Charlotte, Elon, Tennessee, Howard, Duke, Pitt and Liberty.
- The meet will begin on Friday night at 5:00 pm with the women's 60m hurdles prelims and will come to an end at around 8:50 pm with the men's 300m finals.
- On Saturday, the women's 400m finals will open things up at 1:00 pm and the men's 4x400m relay will conclude the meet at 3:20 pm.
- The Panthers opened up the 2020 indoor season last weekend at the Nittany Lion Challenge and they claimed three individual victories.
- The most dominant performance for the Panthers came in the 200m dash as Pitt claimed four of the top-5 finishes. Nikki Scherer led the way with a win in the event, crossing the finish line in 24.31 seconds, the second fastest time in the ACC this season. Jaylyn Aminu took home second place while Eddita Pessima finished in third and Genaya Johnson notched a fifth place finish.
- The Pitt hurdlers continued their strong performance on the track as Pessima claimed her first victory of the season in the 60 meter hurdles, crossing the finish line in a season-best 8.45 seconds in the finals. Senior Aysha Muhammad also posted a strong showing in the final as she claimed fourth place, finishing in 8.77 seconds. On the men's side, Shyheim Wright posted a second place finish in the 60 meter hurdles final, crossing the finish line in second place in a season-best time of 8.07 seconds.
- Junior Breanna Phillips had a great showing in the 600m dash on Saturday as she was able to claim the victory, finishing in a season-best time of 1:32.52. Three other Panthers earned top-6 finishes in the event as Monica McNeil came in fourth in a personal best time of 1:37.19, Alexis Leech finished in fifth in 1:37.19 and Nina Crawford claimed sixth place with a personal best time of 1:38.02.
- Pitt currently has 21 student-athletes who rank inside the top-10 in the ACC in their respective events.
- The Panthers have six women that rank inside the top-10 in the 400m dash, led by Nikki Scherer who has the fastest time in the conference and fourth fastest in the NCAA, 54.28 seconds. Breanna Phillips ranks third, Alexis Leech ranks fourth and Nina Crawford ranks fifth so far this season in the ACC.
- Sophomore Brenda Ayuk currently ranks second in the ACC in a pair of events, 800m and mile.
- The women's 4x400m relay quartet of Flora Ahiarakwe, Nina Crawford, Breanna Phillips and Nikki Scherer leads the ACC as they finished in 3:45.01 at the Nittany Lion Challenge.
- The Panthers will return to the track next weekend at Virginia Tech once again as they will compete in the Hokie Invitational from Friday, Jan. 24 to Saturday, Jan. 25 at the Rector Field House.
