Panthers Open 2020 At Nittany Lion Challenge On Saturday

PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh track and field team will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 11 as they head to the Nittany Lion Challenge hosted by Penn State. The events will begin at 11:00 am and conclude at around 5:00 pm inside the Ashenfelter III Indoor Track Facility.
SCOUTING THE FIELD
- Teams competing in the Nittany Lion Challenge on Saturday include Army, Georgetown, Maryland, Penn State, Saint Joseph's and VCU.
- The lone nationally-ranked team the Panthers will compete against on Saturday are the host Penn State Nittany Lions. The PSU women rank No. 14 while the men are ranked No. 25.
- Before break, the Panthers competed in the Youngstown State Icebreaker meet and the Boston University Opener. Pitt posted nine victories in their indoor season openers.
- Sophomore Brenda Ayuk opened up her Pitt track and field career with a pair of victories at Youngstown State as she notched the win in the 800 meter run and the mile run. Her time of 4:53.35 in the indoor mile was the 10th best time in program history in the event and currently ranks fifth in the NCAA. Her time of 2:13.79 is the seventh fastest time in the NCAA this season.
- Senior Drew Glick had an impressive start to his final campaign as he notched a victory in the 800m run with a personal best time of 1:50.79, the sixth fastest time in program history. He also currently leads the NCAA in the event so far this season.
- Defending ACC indoor high jump champion Greg Lauray had a strong start to his season as he posted a first place finish in the high jump, clearing 2.16m. His height currently leads the NCAA in the event.
- In the 60m hurdles, Pitt had a trio come inside the top-five led by Eddita Pessima who picked up where she left off last season as she posted a victory in the event, crossing the line in 8.47 seconds, the ninth fastest time in the NCAA so far this season. Finishing right behind Pessima was senior Aysha Muhammad who placed second in 8.63 seconds while Breanna Phillips finished in fifth place in 9.07 seconds after running a personal best time of 8.87 in the prelims. Pessima also notched a third place finish in the 60m dash in 7.50 seconds, a personal best time and the seventh fastest in program history.
- Taylor Middleton made a strong first impression for her senior campaign as she won the long jump with a leap of 5.93m while fellow senior Jordan Fields claimed fourth place with a jump of 5.66m.
- Making her Pitt debut after transferring from Western Michigan, Abena Atuobi notched the victory in the shot put with a throw of 14.65m, the fourth best throw in program history in the indoor shot put.
- Pitt will return to action on Jan. 17-18 as they head to Blacksburg, VA to participate in the Virginia Tech Invitational.
