
No. 10 Pitt Volleyball Sweeps Buckeyes at PPG Paints Arena

Panthers Move to 4-0 to Start 2019 Season
PITTSBURGH – The No. 10 Pitt volleyball team (4-0) recorded its fourth consecutive sweep to start the season, this time topping Ohio State (2-2) Friday night at PPG Paints Arena, site of the 2019 NCAA Division I Championship.
The victory marks the first time since 2014 that the Panthers have posted four sweeps to begin the year. Pitt's last win against Ohio State came nearly 20 years ago, by forfeit at Fitzgerald Field House Sept. 15, 1999.
Junior outside hitter Kayla Lund led the Panthers in kills for the third time in four matches with 13 on the day, hitting .385. Fellow pin hitter Stephanie Williams joined Lund in double figures with 11 kills and added seven digs.
Rookies setter Lexis Akeo put forth 31 assists with eight digs, and redshirt senior libero Hali Hillegas picked up a match-high 20 digs. It was her second 20-dig outing of the season so far.
Pitt hit .178 for the match while limiting Ohio State to .107 success on the attack. The Panthers had the advantage in kills (39-33), assists (36-30), service aces (5-0) and digs (46-41).
Set One: No. 10 Pitt 25, Ohio State 21
Pitt trailed by five twice, down 6-1 and then 10-5. However, the Panthers surged on a 15-3 run to pull ahead, 20-13. The Buckeyes came back within three (20-17), following a 4-0 run, but Pitt was able to hold them off to win the first, 25-21.
Lund posted five kills in the frame as the Panthers out-hit Ohio State (.150-.143).
Set Two: No. 10 Pitt 25, Ohio State 19
The second frame saw four early ties, then Pitt gained an 11-8 margin. A 5-1 run put the Buckeyes ahead 13-12, but the Panthers answered with a 5-2 run to make it 18-14 in their favor. Pitt continued its dominance, ending the set on a 9-2 run to win, 25-19.
Set Three: No. 10 Pitt 25, Ohio State 19
The Panthers jumped out to a 10-3 start to the frame before a 4-1 Buckeye run cut into the lead (11-7). Pitt stayed ahead, and used a late 4-0 run to extend its margin to 19-13, before claiming the frame by the same distance, 25-19. Sophomore middle hitter Sabrina Starks contributed three kills in the frame, hitting .429. Pitt totaled five blocks during the set.

The Panthers will head back to Fitzgerald Field House to continue the ChampYinz Invitational Saturday against Green Bay (1 p.m.) and Duquesne (8 p.m.).
