PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh baseball program will host a pair of games against Division I opponents as well as play a three-game Blue-Gold Series as part of its fall schedule as announced today by second-year head coach Mike Bell. The Panthers welcome 20 newcomers to roster this season as Bell continues to revamp the Pitt program.
"We are excited and looking forward to getting started this fall," said Bell. "Our staff has worked extremely hard to add depth and balance to our roster. With the return of a core group of student-athletes and an infusion of talented newcomers, this fall will provide opportunity for great competition and internal growth as a program."
The Panthers open practice Monday, Sept. 9 at Charles L. Cost Field and will hold 14 team practices prior to Friday, Sept. 27 home exhibition game against Akron. Pitt will log five more days of practice before hosting Youngstown State Saturday, Oct. 5 at Cost Field. Both games are open to the public with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m.
The Blue-Gold Series games will be played Oct. 9-11 with first pitch set for noon. Rosters for the intrasquad series will be determined at a later date.
"These next five weeks will be a crucial time for our student-athletes as we continue to prepare for the upcoming season," added Bell. "Highlighted by two exhibition games and a three-game Blue-Gold Series, we are looking forward to competing and developing each and every day."
Pitt posted a 21 wins, including marquee victories over No. 11 North Carolina, No. 7 Georgia Tech and national powerhouse Florida State, in the inaugural season with the Panthers for Bell. Connor Perry and Nico Popa earned ABCA/Rawlings All-Region honors, while Dan Hammer, Perry and Derek West were selected in the 2019 MLB Draft. Cole MacLaren also signed a free agent deal with the Detroit Tigers following the season.
