Panthers Win Both Doubleheader Matches Sunday
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh softball team took both games in its fall ball season-opening doubleheader against Slippery Rock and West Liberty Sunday afternoon at Vartabedian Field in the Petersen Sports Complex.
"I saw some really great performances on the mound from our entire staff," head coach Jodi Hermanek said. "I thought each of them came out and did a good job just owning their pitches. One of our goals for them today was to win the spots and I thought they did a really good job of doing that, mixing speeds and coming out here, just really owning their craft."
The Panthers bolstered a 9-1 victory in the first game over Slippery Rock. Senior Kaitlyn Kruger started Pitt's scoring in the second inning with a homerun though the left side. Following, junior Hunter Levesque scored a three-run homer over the center wall to give the Panthers a 7-0 lead entering the sixth inning. Juniors Lolo Sanchez and Morgan Batesole rounded out the scoring for the Panthers with two and three runs, respectively. Slippery Rock posted their only score of the game in the top of the seventh inning.
The Panthers were victorious in their second game of the day over West Liberty, 2-1. Sophomore Sarah Seamans added the Panthers' first run in the second inning with her first home run of the season over the left field wall. Sophomore Abby Edwards and junior Brittany Knight kept the Hilltoppers scoreless in the first six innings on the mound, allowing only one run in the seventh. Sanchez also impressed in game two, adding her fourth run of the day.
"We're going to celebrate these two victories," Hermanek said. "It's the first time for this squad to get together and play together and we definitely have some good stuff to take back to the drawing board and look at."
