Panthers Set for Road Contest against the Orange
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh men's soccer team continues ACC play Friday, Sept. 7 when the Panthers travel to Syracuse, N.Y., for a 7 p.m. match at SU Soccer Field.

LAST TIME OUT
- Pitt captured a 2-0 victory over Boston College Friday, Sept. 20 at Newton Soccer Field.
- Both teams were scoreless through most of the first half of the match before a strike from freshman Veljko Petkovic off the free kick 26 yards out, which gave the Panthers a 1-0 advantage.
- Junior Alexander Dexter sealed the deal with a goal inside the 18' with less than five minutes left in the game.
- Petkovic closed the match with a team-high seven shots, followed by senior Braden Kline and junior Sito Sena with two. Dexter and freshman Valentin Noel each recorded one shot.
- In goal, redshirt junior Arie Ammann recorded the clean sheet while collecting four saves in 90 minutes of action.
THE SERIES – SYRACUSE
- Through 23 previous contests, the Panthers and the Orange are tied with a 9-9-4 all-time series record.
- The two teams' last meeting came in 2017, with Pitt securing a 2-1 home victory over the Orange.
- The Oranges' last win in the series came via a 4-0 home victory over the Panthers in 2016.
SCOUTING THE ORANGE
- Syracuse enters Friday's contest with a 2-2-3 [0-1-1 ACC] record, most recently dropping a 1-0 road matchup to then-ranked No. 1 Wake Forest Saturday, Sept. 21.
- Syracuse is coached by Ian McIntyre, who owns a 84-57-24 record during his time with the Orange and a 189-122-56 all-time record.
- Through eight games, sophomore Ryan Raposo leads the Oranges' offense with four goals, while senior Massismo Ferrin isn't too far behind with three.
- In goal, sophomore keeper Christian Miesch has played seven games recording 18 saves, while redshirt junior Jake Leahy has played three games with two saves.
KIZZA COMMANDING ATTENTION
- Junior Edward Kizza closed out his 2018 campaign tied for third in program history for single-season goals (15) while ranking fifth in points (30).
- Kizza ranked fifth in goals nationally, ninth in shot accuracy (.622) and 11th in points per game (1.67), while ranking first in each category among ACC players.
- The historic season led Kizza to First Team All-ACC honors, Second Team All-Region recognition and a spot on the All-ACC Academic Team.
- Through seven games, Kizza paces the team in shots (22), shots on goal (nine), points (eight) and goals (four).
- The Kampala, Uganda, native picked up right where he left off to start the 2019 season, recording a brace against No. 2 Indiana in the squad's season-opener Friday, Aug. 30. In the match, Kizza recorded the fastest consecutive goals in program history after scoring at the 35:24 and 35:31 mark, with the seven-second difference besting the old record of 34 seconds set by Michael Tuohy and John Cordier in 2013.
FRESHMEN FOCUS
- The Panthers freshmen class has made an immediate impact through the first seven games of the 2019 season.
- Five freshmen have already seen playing time through the early stretch of the season in Lucas Cyriacus, Josh Hesson, Valentin Noel, Arturo Ordonez and Veljko Petkovic, with starts from Noel (seven), Hesson (four), Ordonez (five) and Petkovic (three).
- Petkovic has added two goals on the year, while Hesson has added one.
SIZING UP THE 2019 SLATE
- Pitt faces some tough competition in the 2019 season, with a schedule that includes 10 NCAA Tournament teams and two NCAA College Cup squads from a year ago.
- The Panthers have already faced then-ranked No. 2 Indiana, No. 1 Wake Forest and RV Akron on the season, and are set to square off with six other teams either ranked or receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches Poll in No. 5 Virginia, No. 11 North Carolina, No. 15 Duke, No. 16 Notre Dame, No. 17 Virginia Tech and RV Boston College.
