Panthers Take Down Second Ranked Opponent in Three Days
MALIBU, Calif. – The No. 6 Pitt volleyball team (9-0) defeated its second ranked opponent in three days, picking up a 3-1 win (25-22, 23-25, 25-23, 25-21) over previously unbeaten No. 16 Utah (8-1) at the Pepperdine ASICS Classic at Firestone Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon.
The Panthers defeated No. 10 Oregon Wednesday night before traveling to Malibu, Calif., for the weekend for their highest-ranked win since 2016.
Redshirt senior outside hitter Stephanie Williams earned her second consecutive double-double with 10 kills and 17 digs. She added four services aces to lead the Panthers. Freshman setter Lexis Akeo had her third straight double-double with 51 assists and 10 digs.
Junior outside Kayla Lund led Pitt in kills for the third consecutive match, posting 19. Senior middle Layne Van Buskirk had 15 kills, hitting .565.
Pitt had the upper hand in hitting percentage (.251-.209), kills (67-48), assists (63-46), service aces (9-4), and digs (61-60).
Set One: No. 6 Pitt 25, No. 16 Utah 22
The Panthers secured an early 9-7 lead, but a 5-0 run that included four consecutive blocks put the Utes ahead, 12-9. Pitt responded with a dominant 11-2 run, going up, 20-14. Utah did not fold, using a 6-1 run to come within one point of the Panthers (23-22), but Pitt finished off the set after a Ute error and a Lund kill. Lund paced Pitt with six kills in the set.
Set Two: No. 16 Utah 25, No. 6 Pitt 23
The second set was highlighted by 18 ties and seven lead changes, with neither team leading by more than two at any point in the frame. A 6-3 run put Pitt ahead, 20-19, but the Utes answered with an identical run to claim the win, 25-23.
Set Three: No. 6 Pitt 25, No. 16 Utah 23
Pitt came out of an 11-9 deficit by rattling off four consecutive points to earn a 13-11 lead, but a 4-0 run by Utah erased it. The Panthers took control of the set with a 6-1 run to go ahead, 21-17. Utah stayed in it, coming within one point (24-23), but a Van Buskirk kill ended the frame in the Panthers' favor.
Set Four: No. 6 Pitt 25, No. 16 Utah 21
The Panthers trailed by four (13-9) but tied it up after a 5-1 run that included back-to-back aces by Williams. Later on, a 4-1 stretch gave Pitt a 19-17 advantage. Utah was able to tie the match at 19, but Pitt answered with three straight points to gain a 22-19 lead. The Panthers held off the Utes for a 25-21 win to close the match.

The Panthers will close out the Pepperdine ASICS Classic against the host Waves Saturday at 10 p.m. ET at Firestone Fieldhouse.
