Pitt Closes Italy Tour with 104-41 Win Over Vicenza All-Stars

VICENZA, ITALY – Pitt shot 52 percent from the field and six players scored in double figures as the Panthers closed out its Italy Tour with a 104-41 win over the Vicenza All-Stars Monday evening. Ryan Murphy led the way with 21 points, while Karim Coulibaly added a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Pitt jumped out to a 22-16 advantage in the opening quarter as Eric Hamilton set the tone with six points and five rebounds in the stanza. Trey McGowens brought the crowd to its feet with a steal and and-1 dunk on Luca Djoncic.
The Panthers broke things open with a 27-11 advantage in the second quarter as Murphy knocked down a pair of threes and added a two-point field goal to enter the half with a team-high 13 points. Coulibaly and Au'Diese Toney added five points, apiece, in the quarter as Pitt jumped out to a 49-27 halftime advantage.
Pitt took its defense to another level in the second half of play holding the Vicenza All-Stars to just four made field goals and 14 total points. The Panthers forced 29 turnovers in the game and limited the opposition to 30.7 (16-of-52) percent shooting from the field.
Coulibaly led a 26-6 third quarter charge with eight points, while Toney added seven points in the quarter. Toney closed out the quarter with a three-point field goal to give the Panthers a 75-33 edge.
Freshmen Justin Champagnie, Gerald Drumgoole and Coulibaly combined for 15 points in the final quarter and Murphy knocked down his fourth and fifth threes of the game as Pitt posted a 29-8 advantage over the final 10 minutes of action. Onyebuchi Ezeakudo recorded five assists in the quarter and Curtis Aiken, Jr. knocked down a three-point field goal with just over a minute remaining as all 11 players scored in the game for the Panthers.
Murphy finished the game 8-of-13 from the field, including 5-of-8 from three-point range, to score a game-high 21 points and earn Player of the Game honors. Coulibaly went 8-of-12 from the field and added two blocks and two steals as Pitt shot 51.9 percent (42-of-81) from the field for the game.
The Panthers held a sizeable rebound margin, 61-31, as the post trio of Coulibaly, Hamilton and Terrell Brown combined for 29 boards, including 13 offensive rebounds. Hamilton grabbed seven of his 10 rebounds off the offensive glass.
McGowens finished with 12 points, three assists and four steals, while Toney added 12 points, six rebounds (five offensive) and two assists. Drumgoole recorded 10 points, five rebounds, three assists and a steal with Champagnie adding 10 points, six rebounds and two steals.
Pitt will spend one more day in Venice before returning to the Pittsburgh Wednesday, Aug. 14. The Panthers closed out the competition portion of the Italy trip with a 3-0 record.
