PITTSBURGH – As former University of Pittsburgh baseball players are getting closer to their goals of making the big league, those on their organization's Double-A teams have been making a name for themselves so far this season.
A fourth-round pick of the Texas Rangers in the 2016 draft, Charles Leblanc has been making a name for himself at every level he's been at. In his first season in Double-A with the Frisco RoughRiders, Leblanc was already named an All-Star of the Texas League, starting off red hot with the RoughRiders this season, going on a 12-game hit streak that stretched from April 20 to May 6. Currently, Leblanc leads the team with a .290 average, 81 hits and three triples while ranking second in runs scored and in on-base percentage at .350. The infielder also ranks near the top of the league, ranking fifth in hits and 11th in average.
The notable 2019 campaign from the Laval, Quebec native comes a year after being voted to the Carolina League All-Star Game as a member of the Down East Wood Ducks in 2018. With Down East last season, Leblanc led the team with a .274 average, 128 hits and 27 doubles, finishing second with a .349 on-base percentage and 72 RBI.
Called up to the Double-A Mobile BayBears on May 13, Isaac Mattson has made the most of his time with his new club since arriving from the Inland Empire 66ers. Appearing in 13 games with Mobile this season, the 2017 19th-round pick of the Los Angeles Angels has already racked up three wins in his short tenure there, boasting a 2.70 ERA out of the pen. He has seen a lot of recent success with the BayBears, not allowing a run in his last six appearances, racking up 14.0 innings in that stretch. The righty has also made it difficult for opposing batters to make contact, striking out 37 in his 23.1 innings with Mobile, boasting a .209 opponent batting average with the club.
His impressive stint with the Double-A club is just an extension of a dominant season so far for the Erie, Pa., native. Starting his third professional season with Inland Empire, Mattson appeared in eight games, racking up three wins and 30 strikeouts in 20.1 innings while boasting a 0.89 ERA.
Playing with his former Pitt teammate in Leblanc at Frisco, 2016 draftee Alex Kowalczyk has been finding his footing in Double-A with the RoughRiders this season. On a hot streak as of late, the 12th-round pick of the Texas Rangers is on an impressive run, hitting .308 in his last 10 game.. In 35 games with Frisco this year, Kowalczyk is hitting .250 with a .289 on-base percentage with three home runs after spending last season with Leblanc with the Down East Wood Ducks, where he hit .247 with a .332 on-base percentage.
