PITTSBURGH – Freshman hurdler Sydni Townsend will compete in her first NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship in Austin, Texas, which begins on Wednesday, June 5 at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of University of Texas.
Townsend became the first Panther in two years to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships two weeks ago as she claimed third place in her heat to earn the automatic bid into the semifinal round in the women's 400m hurdles. The freshman finished strong in her second race of the weekend at the East Regionals as she crossed the line with a personal best time of 57.86 seconds, the fourth best in program history, to move on to Austin.
The Philadelphia, PA native will enter the women's 400m hurdles semifinals on Thursday night as the 23rd seed in the event. Townsend will be competing in the first heat of the event against hurdlers from Maryland, LSU, Kentucky, Kansas State, Miami and Duke.
The top two times from each heat will automatically qualify for the finals along with the two next best times from all three heats combined.
