PITTSBURGH – Only one stop away from the MLB, former University of Pittsburgh baseball players have been showing off at the Triple-A level in their attempts to make it back to the big leagues.
Already making appearances this season with the New York Yankees, 2014 draft pick Joe Harvey has been battling on the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. Having appeared in nine games with the Yankees so far this season, Harvey has racked up 11 strikeouts and earned a win in 10.0 innings coming out of the pen before being sent back to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
In nine games with the RailRiders this year, the Audobon, Pa., native has boasted a 2.53 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 10.2 innings. Harvey has been a key role out of the pen for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, converting on all three of his save opportunities this season. The righty has also been difficult to hit off in Triple-A as opposing batters are hitting only .111 off him. Harvey's impressive 2019 campaign follows a dominating 2018 season, where the former Pitt pitcher earned a 1.66 ERA in 54.1 innings with the RailRiders while striking out 61 batters.
In 2018, former Panther's pitcher Ray Black displayed his skills with the San Francisco Giants, where he appeared in 23 games with the major league club. In 23.1 innings with the Giants, Black racked up 33 strikeouts and finished the season with two wins coming out of the pen.
This season, Black has appeared in 13 games for the Triple-A Sacramento River Cats after sustaining an injury early in the season. In 14.0 innings this summer, the Wilkes-Barre, Pa., native has struck out 19 batters while limiting opposing batters to a meager .170 batting average when facing him. Black has recently been a force to reckon with on the mound for the River Cats as he has allowed only one earned run in his last nine appearances.
