Cancer Survivor and Pitt Softball Alumnae Cory Berliner to Climb Mt. Kilimanjaro
PITTSBURGH – Former University of Pittsburgh softball standout and cancer survivor Cory Berliner (now Huminsky) is set to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro in July of 2020 with the help of the CancerClimber Association.
Huminsky was diagnosed with lung cancer at the age of 11, but made a full recovery following treatment at Children's Hospital Colorado and went on to have a standout career as a pitcher on the Panthers' softball team.
A native of Fort Collins, Colo., Huminsky played at Pitt from 2008-2011, where she closed out her career leaving multiple marks on the program record book. She currently ranks first all-time in ERA (2.03), second in complete games (62), third in both innings (632.2) and wins (49), fourth in strikeouts (414) and is tied for fourth in shutouts (13).
Huminsky will be teaming with CancerClimber Association and its co-founder, Sean Swarner, in her effort to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro in July of 2020. Swarner, a survivor of Hodgkin's Lymphoma and Askin's Sarcoma, became the first cancer survivor to climb to the peak of Mt. Everest before topping the highest peaks in Africa, Europe, South America, Australia, Antarctica and North America. Swarner has since become a renowned motivational speaker and author, while continuing his pursuit of adventure.
The CancerClimber Association, founded by Swarner and his brother Seth, makes annual trips with fellow cancer survivors to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro, with Huminsky scheduled to participate in the 2020 excursion.
"I am extremely excited, nervous and blessed for this opportunity," said Huminsky. "I can't think of a better group of people to push me to keep climbing than a bunch of other cancer survivors. It's truly amazing to see people living life to the fullest after they've heard the words 'you have cancer' - it's inspirational. I would never wish cancer upon anyone, but it certainly did change my life and I would never want to change what happened to me growing up. I am very blessed to have had the amazing softball career I did at Pitt, and now it's time to keep finding new challenges and I can't wait to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro."
Huminsky currently lives in Canonsburg, Pa., with her husband, Ben, where she owns and operates the McMurray Anytime Fitness with her family while also serving as the pitching coach at Peters Township High School and working with C-Side Sports Academy to provide one-on-one pitching lessons.
