Incoming Freshman Makenzie Stiles Named Top Player in the State of New York
CHICAGO – University of Pittsburgh softball incoming freshman Makenzie Stiles has been named the 2018-19 Gatorade New York Softball Player of the Year.
The award, which recognizes both on and off the field excellence, distinguished Stiles as the best high school softball player in the state of New York. The honor makes Stiles a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Softball Player of the Year award, which will be announced in June.
"Pitt softball is extremely proud of Makenzie for her decorated season," said head coach Jodi Hermanek. "It is certainly exciting for her high school coaches and teammates to be able to share this honor alongside Kenzie, as I know her Panther family is elated for her!"
Stiles, a native of Deposit, N.Y., had led the Deposit Central High Lumberjacks to a perfect 17-0 record and a sectional quarterfinals appearance at the time of her selection. On the year, she has compiled a 17-0 record to go along with a 0.06 ERA and 269 strikeouts in 111 innings on the mound. Stiles has also performed well at the plate, hitting for a .433 average while adding 26 RBI.
For her career, Stiles has compiled a state-record 15 perfect games and has collected more than 1,000 strikeouts. She is also a four-time State Class D Player of the Year honoree.
Stiles will join the Panthers for their 2020 season along with fellow incoming freshmen Hope Alley, Kayla Lane, Taegen Lewellen and Becca Miller.
