Pitt Drops Weekend Finale to Oregon
COLUMBIA, Mo. – The University of Pittsburgh softball team's comeback attempt fell just short against Oregon, with the squad dropping a 4-3 contest to the Ducks Sunday afternoon in its weekend finale at Mizzou Softball Stadium.
The Panthers entered the bottom of the seventh down 4-1 before a two-run bomb by senior Olivia Gray made it just a one run game, but the squad ultimately couldn't find enough offense to catch the Ducks.
Redshirt sophomore Brittany Knight earned the start for Pitt, throwing a complete game while allowing just two earned runs and striking out three.
The Panthers produced four hits at the plate, with Gray, senior Gabrielle Fredericks, junior Connor McGaffic and sophomore Hunter Levesque each recording one hit apiece. Both Gray and Levesque also added home runs in the matchup.
SCORING SUMMARY
Oregon opened the scoring in the first frame, using a two-run long ball to jump out to an early lead.
Pitt cut the Ducks' lead in half in the bottom of the inning, with Levesque sending a solo shot over the left field wall to put the score at 2-1.
The Ducks then added another run in the second inning and one more in the fifth to take a 4-1 advantage in the contest.
The Panthers entered the bottom of the seventh inning still down three before a two-run long ball by Gray made it a one-run game, but the team was unable to catch Oregon from there, ultimately taking the 4-3 loss.
UP NEXT
The Panthers will head to Loretto, Pa., for a doubleheader against Saint Francis (Pa.) Tuesday, April 9 beginning at 2 p.m.
