Panthers Collect Consecutive Wins over Orange to Take Series
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The University of Pittsburgh softball team used a 6-1 victory to clinch its ACC series against Syracuse Sunday afternoon at Skytop Stadium.
"I'm extremely proud of this team for coming back from a game one loss to win the series," said head coach Jodi Hermanek. "I'm very pleased with the confidence that we came out with this weekend. Winning this series was extremely important to us for various reasons, and we attacked these games. Now we need to remain consistent in the final two weekends of play."
The Panthers again used a strong pitching performance to pick up the win, with senior Sarah Dawson earning the complete-game victory. The Bridgewater, Mass., native allowed just two hits and one run while striking out three in her seven innings of action.
"We got two solid pitching performances from Brittany [Knight] on Saturday and Sarah [Dawson] today," said Hermanek. "They pitched with command and confidence and led our team in two complete-game wins."
Offensively, Pitt recorded six hits at the plate. Junior Walker Barbee paced the Panthers for the second consecutive game, going 2-for-3 with three RBI, a home run and a triple. Seniors Gabrielle Fredericks, Olivia Gray and Alexis Solak and junior Alexee Haynes each added one hit apiece, with Fredericks and Gray each collecting an RBI in the contest.
"Walker [Barbee] had a huge weekend for us at the plate," said Hermanek. "But I was really just happy with the scoring contributions we had from the top to bottom of our lineup."
SCORING SUMMARY
Both teams went scoreless in the first frame before the Panthers opened up the game with a two-run second inning. Barbee sent home Pitt's first run of the contest with an RBI-triple before senior Taylor Myers used a sac fly to make it 2-0.
Pitt added another run in the third inning via a leadoff long ball by Gray.
The Panthers extended their lead in the fourth frame, with Barbee using a two-RBI home run to put the game at 5-0.
Pitt kept it going in the fifth inning, with a single up the middle by Fredericks scoring Gray from second.
The Orange would score their first run of the game in the bottom of the frame, making it 6-1, but the Panthers would continue their lockdown defense from there to earn the eventual victory.

The Panthers will return home for a three-game ACC series against Notre Dame beginning Saturday, April 27 at Vartabedian Field.
