GREENSBORO, NC – A strong first half effort wasn't enough on Wednesday night as the University of Pittsburgh women's basketball team (11-20, 2-14 ACC) saw their season come to an end in the First Round of the ACC Tournament against the Duke Blue Devils. Duke connected on a season-high 12 three-pointers as they pushed past the Panthers in the second half, 86-64.
"Obviously I'm really excited to be in the ACC Tournament and allow these kids the opportunity to come and do what they do," stated first-year head coach Lance White. "I was really pleased with our first half and our ability to compete and fight. We have talked so much all year long about growth and this game was an exhibition of how far we've come. I think as a basketball team and as a program we really have come a long ways. Sometimes you don't always see it in the end result. But we have really, really come a long way."
Playing in her final game at Pitt, senior Danielle Garven led all Panthers with 16 points and three rebounds across 30 minutes while going 8-for-13 from the floor. Fellow senior Cassidy Walsh closed out her impressive Pitt career with 14 points, two rebounds and two assists while connecting on four triples, a single game ACC Tournament record for the Panthers. Duke responded with another triple but the Panthers defense forced their fifth turnover of the early going and Garven finished off a layup to give Pitt the 9-6 lead at the first media timeout. Out of the timeout, the Blue Devils were able to outscore the Panthers 8-2 before Whitney drilled a jumper to close the first quarter with Pitt trailing Duke 16-13.
The three-pointers began to fall early in the second quarter for the Panthers as they connected on three triples, two from Walsh and one by Whitney, before Kalista Walters finished off a layup to give Pitt the 24-21 lead early in the second. The Blue Devils were able to fight back and outscore Pitt 15-6 over the next four minutes of action before Garven finished off the scoring in the first half with a layup to send the teams to the locker room with Pitt trailing Duke 36-32. The Panthers offense connected on five triples in the second quarter.
