PITTSBURGH – Pitt's three wrestlers in the Round of 12 at the 2019 NCAA Wrestling Championships all suffered defeat on Friday night at PPG Paints Arena.
With each needing a win to clinch All-America honors, redshirt freshmen Micky Phillippi (133) and Nino Bonaccorsi (184) and junior Taleb Rahmani (157) all came up short in the infamous "Blood Round" that determines national finalists and All-Americans in each weight class.
Pitt finished the 2019 NCAA Championships with 9.5 points.
Below is a recap of each session four bout:
133 | #10 Ramon Bravo-Young (Penn State) dec. #4 Micky Phillippi (Pitt), 4-3
Phillippi's season ended in the Round of 12 after a narrow 4-3 decision defeat to Penn State's Roman Bravo-Young. Phillippi scored first with an escape in the second but allowed to takedowns to the Nittany Lion freshman. Despite Phillippi's best efforts, he wasn't able to secure a late takedown that would've swung the match in his favor.
157 | #9 Christian Pagdilao (Arizona State) dec. #12 Taleb Rahmani (Pitt), 13-7
Rahmani's run through the consolation 157-pound consolation bracket came up one win short of All-America honors as he lost a 13-7 decision to Arizona State's Christian Pagdilao. Rahmani started well and scored the first takedown, but as the match wore on, he found himself on the wrong end of some scrambles that Pagdilao capitalized on.
184 | #26 Dakota Geer (Oklahoma State) dec. #13 Nino Bonaccorsi (Pitt), 6-0
Bonaccorsi's tournament ended with a 6-0 defeat to Oklahoma State's Dakota Geer. Once again, the Pitt redshirt freshman was aggressive in the early stages, but he couldn't convert any shots into takedowns. Once Geer recorded his first takedown, he seized control of the match by dominating on top and seeing out the shutout.
