Session 3 Recap: Three Panthers Set for Round of 12

PITTSBURGH – Three University of Pittsburgh wrestlers will compete in Friday night's always-exciting "Blood Round" as Micky Phillippi (133), Taleb Rahmani (157) and Nino Bonaccorsi (184) sit one win away from earning All-America honors at the 2019 NCAA Wrestling Championships at PPG Paints Arena.
Phillippi and Bonaccorsi were both defeated in Friday afternoon's championship quarterfinals and thus were placed into the Round of 12 matches, while Rahmani has worked his way into the top 12 thanks to a thrilling run through the consolation brackets.
After earning a pair of wins on Thursday, Pitt's redshirt freshmen tandem of Phillippi and Bonaccorsi both tasted defeat at NCAAs for the first time Friday. Now they each will have another opportunity to become an All-American in the Round of 12, with No. 4 seed Phillippi against No. 10 Roman Bravo-Young of Penn State while No. 13 Bonaccorsi challenges No. 26 Dakota Geer of Oklahoma State.
Thanks to two wins on Friday afternoon, including a thrilling pin in sudden victory, No. 12 seed Rahmani faces a Round-of-12 matchup with Arizona State 9-seed Christian Pagdilao, who lost in the quarterfinals.
Pitt heavyweight Demetrius Thomas saw his NCAA Championships come to an end with a defeat in the second round of consolation matches on Friday afternoon.

133 | #5 Luke Pletcher (Ohio State) dec. #4 Micky Phillippi (Pitt), 3-1
Phillippi was edged in the quarterfinals by Ohio State's Luke Pletcher, 3-1, in a battle of western Pennsylvania natives. Pletcher got a key takedown at the end of the first period and held on after the two local wrestlers traded escapes for the only other scoring in the contest. Phillippi will have another chance to earn All-America honors in the Round of 12 later tonight.

184 | #5 Max Dean (Cornell) dec. #13 Nino Bonaccorsi (Pitt), 6-0
Bonaccorsi's run in the championship bracket ended with a 6-0 defeat to 5-seed Max Dean of Cornell. The Pitt freshman started the match on the front foot, forcing a stalling warning for Dean. But the Big Red wrestler countered with a takedown late in the first period and controlled on top in the second before eventually completing a shutout win with a late reversal. Bonaccorsi will have another chance to earn All-America status later tonight.

Rahmani took out No. 11 seed Ke-Shawn Hayes from Ohio State with a 7-1 decision in the second consolation round. The Pitt junior used a takedown and nearfall points in the first period to grab an early 4-0 lead and secured the result with another takedown in the closing seconds of the third frame.

Rahmani advanced to the Round of 12 with a sudden victory pin over Purdue's Griffin Parriott. The wrestlers were deadlocked at 1-1 after a pair of escapes in regulation before the Pitt junior won a scramble and stuck Parriott on his back in the overtime session. In his third appearance at the NCAA Championships, Rahmani qualifies for the Round of 12 for the first time.
