Student Organization Maintains University Traditions, Connects with Alumni
PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh student-athletes Haley Brechwald (gymnastics) and Will Connelly (football) have been inducted into the Blue & Gold Society, the Department of Athletics announced Thursday.
With Brechwald and Connelly joining the organization, the Blue & Gold Society now includes seven Current or Forever Panthers, including:
Catie Conrad, gymnastics
Maddie Hobbs, women's soccer
Jimmy Morrissey, football
Anthony Starzynski, men's basketball
Rashad Weaver, football
The 2018 East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Rookie of the Year, Brechwald made a splash for the Pitt gymnastics team during her freshman campaign, leading the Panthers to their first NCAA Regional appearance since 2013. She earned EAGL Rookie of the Week honors a league-record six times and received All-EAGL First Team Floor and All-Around honors during the 2018 season. In addition to her impressive athletic résumé, Brechwald holds a 3.793 cumulative grade point average as a political science major.
"I am so honored and excited to be a part of this amazing group of individuals," Brechwald said. "I look forward to serving Pitt alumni, Current Panthers and the Pittsburgh community. Hail to Pitt!."
Connelly, out of Beaver, Pa., joined the Pitt football program in the fall of 2018 as a walk-on placekicker. Learning from Pitt's renowned special teams coach Andre Powell, Connelly redshirted during his true freshman season in 2018.
Prior to that, Connelly was the starting placekicker and kickoff specialist at Beaver Area, where he booted seven field goals as a senior to earn Pennsylvania Football Writers All-Class 3A and first team All-Beaver Valley Conference in helping the Bobcats reaching the WPIAL playoffs.
"What I've experienced at Pitt, even as a freshman, has been remarkable," Connelly said. "Being selected to join the Blue and Gold Society is an honor and an amazing opportunity to contribute. I can't wait to get started!"
