Head Coach Jodi Hermanek Earns 400th Career Victory after Win Over Nicholls State
OXFORD, Miss. – University of Pittsburgh head coach Jodi Hermanek collected her 400th career victory following Pitt's 5-3 win over Nicholls State Saturday afternoon at the Ole Miss Softball Complex in Oxford, Miss.
The Panthers dropped their second contest of the day to Ole Miss, losing a 4-3 nail-biter in the seventh inning.
"No doubt about it, this milestone is shared with the talented and impressive student-athletes I've been blessed to lead along the way, along with the amazing assistant coaches who have helped guide me through it all," said Hermanek. "I am thrilled to have earned this 400th victory in the new era of Pitt softball.
"Today was a competitive team effort by the Panthers, and I'm proud of the energy that we gave in our doubleheader. Corners continue to get turned, and the identity of our team is beginning to shine through. We will continue to focus on Pitt softball and the team we're training to become."
Freshman Abby Edwards earned the start against the Colonels, recording the win after allowing just three earned runs and striking out three in 6.1 innings of action. Senior Taylor Rahach came in to relieve Edwards in the seventh inning, tallying a save after throwing 0.2 innings of scoreless ball.
The Panthers collected eight hits in the contest, with junior Alexee Haynes leading the way, producing a 3-for-4 showing at the plate while adding two RBIs. Senior Gabrielle Fredericks also had an impressive game offensively, going 2-for-3 to go along with a home run and two RBIs. Junior Connor McGaffic, sophomore Brie Horrell and freshman Katlyn Pavlick all added one hit apiece in the matchup.
Redshirt sophomore Brittany Knight started on the mound in game two, allowing just four earned runs while striking out one in 6.1 innings of work against the Rebels.
Four Pitt players recorded hits in the matchup, with senior Alexis Solak posting a 2-for-3 effort while adding a solo shot to left field. Pavlick, junior Walker Barbee and sophomore Hunter Levesque each collected a hit apiece, with both Levesque and Pavlick recording home runs in the contest.
SCORING SUMMARY – GAME ONE
Pitt opened up the scoring in the first frame, taking an early 1-0 lead. Pavlick started the inning with a leadoff double down the left field line before Levesque advanced her to third with a sac bunt. Haynes then scored Pavlick with an RBI-single to right field.
The Panthers really got their bats going in the second inning, scoring four runs in the frame. McGaffic started things off with a standup double, followed by a two-run shot to right field by Fredericks. Following a walk by Pavlick, Levesque sent a ball to right field, scoring the freshman from first. Haynes then used an RBI-single to score Levesque from first, giving Pitt a 5-0 advantage.
Nicholls State would collect its first run of the game in the sixth inning, using an RBI-single to score a runner from second.
The Colonels would add two more in the final frame, but ultimately couldn't find enough offense to catch the Panthers.
SCORING SUMMARY – GAME TWO
The Panthers got off to a hot start against the Rebels, starting the contest with back-to-back long balls by Levesque and Pavlick to take a 2-0 lead.
Ole Miss would immediately answer, adding two runs of its own in the bottom of the inning to even the score.
Both teams then went scoreless for the next three innings before Solak sent a ball over the left field wall in the fifth frame, giving Pitt a 3-2 lead.
The Panthers still owned their one-run advantage heading into the bottom of the seventh, but the Rebels refused to quit. Ole Miss used an RBI-single with runners on to tie the contest, then laid down a squeeze bunt to score the winning run.
