Panthers Drop Two Contests to Blue Devils on Saturday
DURHAM, N.C. – The University of Pittsburgh softball team dropped two contest to Duke Saturday afternoon at the Duke Softball Stadium in Durham, N.C.
Pitt fell in game one, 4-3, in a nine-inning contest that was played over two days. The teams' started the matchup on Friday, but had to postpone the contest in the seventh inning due to lightning in the area. The Panthers then dropped game two against the Blue Devils by a score of 8-0.
Freshman Abby Edwards earned the start for Pitt in game one. The Dwight, Ill., native threw 8.2 innings of ball, allowing just three earned runs while striking out one.
At the plate, seven Pitt players combined for nine hits in total. Freshman Katlyn Pavlick went 2-for-4 while adding two RBIs, with senior Gabrielle Fredericks also contributing a 2-for-4 effort. Senior Alexis Solak, juniors Walker Barbee and Connor McGaffic and sophomores Morgan Batesole and Chandler Walter all added one hit apiece in the matchup.
The Panthers utilized three different pitchers for game two in Edwards, senior Taylor Rahach and junior Alexee Haynes. The trio combined to allow eight earned runs while striking out one.
Pitt collected three hits in the contest, with Haynes, Solak and sophomore Hunter Levesque all recording one apiece.
SCORING SUMMARY – GAME ONE
Pitt got on the board first in game one, with junior Walker Barbee using a sac fly to right field to score senior Taylor Myers from third in the second inning.
The Panthers added two more in the top of the fifth, with Pavlick sending a ball into center field, scoring Batesole and Walter and giving Pitt a 3-0 advantage.
The Blue Devils answered back in the bottom of the inning, using a two-RBI home run to center field to cut into Pitt's lead.
Duke then evened the score in the bottom of the seventh, using a sac fly to right field to put the score at three apiece.
In the bottom of the ninth, a double to left field with runners on would score another for the Blue Devils, ending the contest.
SCORING SUMMARY – GAME TWO
Duke took a 2-0 advantage in the third frame following a bases-clearing triple to right field.
The Blue Devils then added six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, putting the score at 8-0 and enacting the run rule.

The Panthers will close out their series against the Blue Devils with a 12 p.m. contest on Sunday.
