Pitt to Host 2019 NCAA Volleyball Tournament Opening Rounds

Panthers Earn Highest Seed in Program History at No. 6
PITTSBURGH – For the second consecutive year, the 2019 ACC Champion University of Pittsburgh volleyball team (29-1, 18-0 ACC) will host the NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Tournament First and Second Rounds at Petersen Events Center.
The two first-round matches will be held Friday, Dec. 6. The winners will face off in the second round on Saturday, Dec. 7.
The Panthers earned a No. 6 seed, marking their highest NCAA Tournament placement in program history. Pitt earned the ACC's automatic bid to the tournament by winning the league's 2019 championship title. The Panthers became the first team since Georgia Tech in 2004 to go unbeaten in the conference schedule (18-0).
This marks the Panthers' fourth consecutive appearance in the tournament and their 15th appearance in program history.
Pitt will take on Howard (20-12) Friday, Dec. 6, at 7 p.m. ET in the second of two First Round matches at Petersen Events Center. Cincinnati (25-6) and VCU (24-6) will face off in Friday's first match at 4 p.m. ET. The winners of Friday's matches will meet in the Second Round Saturday, Dec. 7, at 7 p.m. ET at Petersen Events Center.
MATCHUP INFO: Pitt and Howard will face off for the sixth time Friday when the Bison visit Pittsburgh. The Panthers are 5-0 in the all-time series. The teams last faced off Sept. 1, 2012, in a sweep for Pitt.
The Panthers are one of four ACC teams to make the tournament. The other teams include Florida State, Louisville and Notre Dame.
2019 NCAA TOURNAMENT
The 2019 Division I Women's Volleyball championship provides for a field of 64 teams to compete in a single elimination tournament. Of the 64 teams, 32 teams will receive automatic qualification while the remaining 32 teams are selected on an at-large basis by the Division I Women's Volleyball Committee.
First and Second round competition will be held at 16 non-predetermined campus sites. At each campus site, four teams will compete in single-elimination first round competition. The two advancing teams then compete against each other in single-elimination second round competition at the same campus site. The winning team from each of the 16 second rounds advances to the regional round.
Regionals for the NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship will be held at four non-predetermined campus sites. At each site, four teams compete in single-elimination regional semifinal competition. The two advancing teams then compete against each other in single-elimination regional final. The winning team from each of the four regions will advance to the DI Women's Volleyball Championship final site in Pittsburgh, Pa.
The 2019 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship will be held at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pa. The National Semifinals will be held December 19, at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. ET on ESPN. The National Championship will take place December 21, at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN2.
