Women’s Volleyball, Football Student-Athletes Honored
PITTSBURGH – Sabrina Starks of women's volleyball and Kylan Johnson of football were named the Pitt Student-Athletes of the Week following impressive performances in their respective sports.
Starks, a sophomore middle blocker, helped the No. 2 Pitt volleyball team reach its best start to ACC play in program history as the Panthers improved to 12-0 in the league. Starks averaged a team-best 2.0 blocks per frame in sweeps over Wake Forest (Nov. 1) and Duke (Nov. 3). She added 2.33 blocks per frame while hitting a scorching team-best mark of .765 for the weekend, with 14 kills on 17 attempts and just one error. The sweeps were Pitt's seventh and eighth in a row, marking an all-time best streak for the program in ACC play. The Panthers have won 25 consecutive sets dating back to a 3-1 victory at then-ranked No. 23 Florida State (Oct. 11).
Johnson, a senior linebacker, made the most critical play of the game in Pitt football's 20-10 win at Georgia Tech Saturday. The Panthers were protecting a 17-10 lead late in the third quarter when the Yellow Jackets reached Pitt's 4-yard line when Johnson jarred the ball from Georgia Tech's Lucas Johnson on a QB draw just shy of the goal line. Cam Bright scooped up the fumble in the end zone and raced 79 yards the opposite way. Pitt parlayed the turnover into a field goal for a 20-10 lead and Georgia Tech never threatened again. In addition to his forced fumble, Johnson compiled five solo tackles and a sack. His sack forced a field goal after Georgia Tech was at the Pitt 10 following a blocked punt .Johnson led a Pitt defensive effort that yielded only 194 yards.
Up next, No. 2 Pitt volleyball (23-1, 12-0) will stay at home to host Georgia Tech (Nov. 8) and Clemson (Nov. 10) at Fitzgerald Field House.
Following a bye week, Pitt football will resume action at home against North Carolina Thursday, Nov. 14, at Heinz Field.
