Women’s Basketball, Football Student-Athletes Honored
PITTSBURGH – Aysia Bugg of women's basketball and Kenny Pickett of football were named the Pitt Student-Athletes of the Week following impressive performances in their respective sports.
Bugg, a graduate student, continues to impress for Pitt women's basketball after missing most of the last two seasons due to injury. For the week, the sixth year guard averaged a team-high 21.5 points, 2.0 assists and 2.0 rebounds while connecting on 10 three-pointers and shooting 50 percent from behind the arc. Bugg went off in the Panthers big come-from-behind victory over Central Connecticut State on Monday night as she netted a career-high 26 points, four assists and two steals while going 7-for-19 from the floor, a career-best 6-for-12 from behind the arc and a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe. She went over the 20-point plateau for just the fourth time in her career in the win over the Blue Devils. Bugg led the Panthers in scoring once again on Saturday afternoon as she netted 17 points and two boards while going 4-for-8 from three-point range. On the year, Bugg ranks second in the ACC in scoring (20.0 ppg), first in three-pointers made (13) and fifth in three-point field goal percentage (.464).
Pickett was named the ACC Quarterback of the Week after throwing for 359 yards and accounting for three total touchdowns, including a three-yard run on the opening possession of overtime that proved to be the difference in Pitt's 34-27 win over North Carolina. He ran for two scores and threw a 74-yard touchdown (to Shocky Jacques-Louis) while completing 25-of-41 passes with no interceptions and rushed for 53 yards on 12 carries. The junior totaled 412 of the Panthers' season-high 498 yards. He now has three 300-yard passing games this season, the most by a Pitt quarterback since 2012.
Pitt women's basketball is home for its next two contests, hosting Fairleigh Dickinson Tuesday at 11 a.m. before welcoming Duquesne to Petersen Events Center for the City Game Saturday at 2 p.m.
Pitt football will travel to Blacksburg, Va., for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff Saturday at Virginia Tech.
