Panthers Host Lehigh in First Round Thursday, Nov. 21
INDIANAPOLIS – The University of Pittsburgh men's soccer team has earned a bid into the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship for the first time since 1965 as announced Monday afternoon. The Panthers [9-7-2] host Lehigh [13-4-3] Thursday, Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. at Ambrose Urbanic Field in the Petersen Sports Complex.
"I'm really happy for our guys because they've put in a lot of work," said head coach Jay Vidovich. "I'm thankful for all of the people surrounding the program that have helped us get to this stage for all the support they've given our guys. We're looking forward to the opportunity to have another practice session with meaning and have another meaningful game."
Pitt is making an appearance in the tournament for just the third time in program history, previously earning bids in 1962 and 1965.
Lehigh earned an automatic bid after being crowned the Patriot League Champions Saturday, Nov. 16. The Panthers and Mountain Hawks clash for the second time in program history, meeting last in 2015 which resulted in a 3-0 win for Pitt.
Thursday's winner will face the No. 3 seed Georgetown [15-1-3] Sunday, Nov. 24 in Washington, D.C. in the second round.
Pitt is one of 10 teams to earn a bid out of the ACC as four teams earned a top 10 seed. The Panthers are 5-5-1 on the season against NCAA Tournament qualifiers including a 2-0 win over top-seeded Virginia (Oct. 18).
The 48-team field is made up of champions from 24 conferences, who qualified automatically, in addition to 24 teams that were selected at-large. The top 16 teams were seeded and receive first-round byes. All first-round games will be played Thursday, Nov. 21, on campus sites, while all second-round action will take place Sunday, Nov. 24. The third round will be played Nov. 30 and Dec. 1, while the quarterfinals will be played Dec. 6 and 7.
The Panthers reached the semifinals of the ACC Championship before dropping a 1-0 decision to top ranked and seeded Clemson in South Carolina Wednesday, Nov. 13. Pitt advanced to the semifinals after defeating NC State, 2-1, in the quarterfinal Sunday, Nov. 10.
Tickets to the first round game are now on sale through the Panthers Ticket Office. Broadcast information will be released at a later time.
