MIAMI—The University of Pittsburgh swimming & diving teams won eight individual events and two relay swims as the Panthers went head-to-head against several top programs from outside the Atlantic Coast Conference this weekend at the FIU TYR Fall Classic at the Biscayne Bay Aquatic Center.
Pitt brought a quality roster of swimmers and divers to Miami for the two-day meet against the likes of hosting FIU as well as LSU, TCU, Army West Point, FAU, George Washington and others and emerged with top-three team finishes.
Earning event victories for the Panthers on Friday and Saturday were:
Daisy Anderson, 400 IM, 4:22.83; 200 Fly, 2:03.08
Samy Helmbacher, 200 IM, 1:49.87; 400 IM, 3:52.73
Blaise Vera, 50 Free, 20.17; 100 Free, 44.20
Eben Vorster, 200 Fly, 1:46.90; 500 Free, 4:32.50
Men's 200 Free Relay, 1:21.41
Men's 400 Medley Relay, 3:19.35
"We raced really hard these last two days," Pitt head coach John Hargis said. "Considering the intensity of our training at this time of year, I was impressed with how hard the athletes competed in the sunshine and heat. Our freshmen continue to look really strong. Daisy Anderson, Jerry Chen and Kayla Graham have been very impressive and have a really bright future. And our seniors continue to perform at a high level and bring leadership that will be incredibly valuable for us throughout the season."
The Panthers will be back in action next weekend when they return home for a Saturday quad meet against Duquesne, Villanova and Youngstown State at Trees Pool.
Pitt's home quad meet will begin with diving at 10 a.m. before swimming events start at 1 p.m. Admission is FREE for all fans at Trees Pool next Saturday.
