Legendary Coach Began Career at Pitt in 1976
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh Department of Athletics mourns the loss of legendary volleyball coach Mike Hebert, who passed away Monday in San Diego, Calif., at the age of 75.
Hebert began his career as the second head volleyball coach in Pitt history, leading the Panthers from 1976-79. During his tenure, Pitt won back-to-back Eastern Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (EAIAW) Championships and made two appearances in the AIAW National Championships ('78, '79). He was named the EAIAW Eastern Region Coach of the Year twice.
Over his four years at Pitt, Heber led the Panthers to a 128-53-1 (.706) record.
"Mike will be sorely missed by the volleyball community," Pitt head coach Dan Fisher said. "His impact on our sport is immeasurable. Not only was he a great friend and mentor, he was someone that helped me become the coach I am today. I am deeply grateful for his guidance over the years, and I will miss him."
Following his stint at Pitt, Hebert went on to coach at New Mexico (1980-82), Illinois (1983-95) and Minnesota (1996-2010). He garnered a record of 381-127 over his 15 years as the head coach of the Golden Gophers prior to his retirement in 2010.
While at the helm, he led Minnesota to 14 NCAA tournament appearances, eight NCAA Regional trips, three Final Fours and a Big Ten championship in 2002. Minnesota also reached the NCAA championship game in 2004. It was Minnesota's first Final Four appearance, Big Ten Championship and NCAA runner-up finish in school history.
Over his 35 years as a head coach, Hebert's teams advanced to the NCAA tournament 26 times. He established a 952-392 collegiate head coaching record, spanning from 1976-2010. During the Division I NCAA era, Hebert owned an 892-374 coaching record, which ranks 14th all-time.
Hebert was inducted into the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Hall of Fame in 2006. His coaching career also spread from the collegiate game to international volleyball. Hebert coached the 2003 U.S. National Women's Volleyball Team to a bronze medal at Pan American Games. He was also the head coach of the U.S. Women's Team at the 1991 World University Games and Pan Am Games, as well as the U.S. Women's Team at 1987 World University Games.
