Pitt Earns 30th Consecutive Victory at Fitzgerald Field House
PITTSBURGH – The No. 3 Pitt volleyball team (19-1, 8-0) earned its 30th consecutive victory when playing at Fitzgerald Field House Sunday afternoon, sweeping NC State (8-12, 3-5).
The 30 wins in a row at the facility are a school record, with the Panthers' last loss coming nearly two years prior, on Oct. 22, 2017, to NC State.
The sweep (25-9, 25-16, 25-12) is Pitt's 14th of the year and seventh of ACC play. The Panthers have dropped just one set out of 25 against league opponents.
Pitt had a well-balanced attack with four Panthers posting seven or more kills. Redshirt senior outside hitter Stephanie Williams led the effort with eight kills on .300 (8k-2e-20a), adding eight digs, two service aces and two blocks.
Senior middle Layne Van Buskirk had seven kills on .700 (7k-0e-10a) with five blocks, with fellow middle Sabrina Starks close behind, posting seven kills and three blocks. Junior outside Kayla Lund had seven kills to go along with seven digs.
Freshman setter Lexis Akeo had 29 assists and redshirt senior libero Hali Hillegas led the battle on defense with 13 digs.
The Panthers' .407 hitting percentage was their third-highest of the season, while holding NC State to -.010, the lowest for a Pitt opponent this season. Pitt dominated in nearly every statistic: kills (40-20), assists (35-20), digs (46-31) and blocks (8.5-3.0).
WITH THE WIN…
Set One: No. 3 Pitt 25, NC State 9
It was the most lopsided set of the season for Pitt so far, with the Panthers hitting .550 in the frame and limiting NC State to -.100. Lund, Starks and Williams had three kills apiece in the frame to lead Pitt.
Set Two: No. 3 Pitt 25, NC State 16
The Panthers started slow, down 6-3, but used a 6-1 run to gain a 9-7 lead. Apart from two more ties, the latest at 13, Pitt held on to the lead for the remainder of the frame. A 4-0 run pushed the margin to 22-14, and two kills from senior Alix Dreier brought up set point (24-16). The set ended on a Wolfpack ball handling error.
Set Three: No. 3 Pitt 25, NC State 12
Pitt cruised to a third-set with, starting off with a 4-0 run. Later, a 5-0 run extended the lead to 15-6. The Panthers never looked back, outscoring the Wolfpack 10-6 to complete the sweep. Seven different Panthers contributed kills in each of the the final two frames.
