PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh women's basketball team (9-10, 0-5 ACC) let a 12-point second half lead slip away on Sunday afternoon as the Clemson Tigers collected the 65-59 road victory inside the Petersen Events Center. Senior Kauai Bradley tied a career-high with 17 points in the loss for the Panthers.
"I thought the first half was really good, even a couple minutes into the third quarter with us playing with desire and making plays we have to make," said head coach Lance White. "All the rebounds were going our way. I think when they hit a couple of threes finally, our kids got a little nervous. We quit doing those things that put us in a position to win an ACC basketball game. Overall, we are growing, and I am really proud of Kauai [Bradley]. I think over the last three games she has played extremely well and has really taken her game up a notch. Now we just have to continually get better."
The Panthers saw three players score in double figures on Sunday as Bradley led all scorers with 17 points, six rebounds, three blocks and two assists across 39 minutes. Jasmine Whitney was able to net 10 points, a season-best seven assists, five rebounds and four steals while Cassidy Walsh netted 10 points, a career-high six steals, four rebounds and four assists in the loss.
The Panthers were able to get out to a strong start through the first three minutes of the game as Bradley opened the scoring with a triple and Walsh capped a 10-2 run to force a Clemson timeout with a triple of her own. The Tigers responded quickly with an 8-0 run to tie the game, 12-12, but the Panthers closed the quarter on an 8-4 run that was capped by a layup from Whitney at the buzzer of the first quarter.
Pitt had one of their best defensive quarters of the season in the second quarter on Sunday as they forced 11 Clemson turnovers in the quarter as they were able to extend their lead out to 33-28 at halftime. The scoring was slow to open the quarter as Kyla Nelson drilled a three-pointer to open the scoring and Walsh nailed a three of her own to give Pitt the 26-20 lead midway through the quarter. After a 5-0 run by Clemson, Bradley drilled another three and Whitney finished off a fast break layup to give Pitt the halftime lead.
The third quarter couldn't have started any better for the Panthers as they netted the first seven points of the quarter as Danielle Garven nailed a jumper, Whitney connected on a three and Bradley finished off a fast break layup to force a Clemson timeout. After another Garven jumper gave Pitt their largest lead of the game, 42-30, the Tigers were able to respond with a 16-1 run to take the 46-43 lead with two minutes left in the quarter. Nelson hit a corner three and Garven hit a free throw as it went to the final quarter with Pitt trailing Clemson 50-47.
After the Tigers took control of the game early in the fourth quarter, the Panthers gave one final push to get back into the game as Bradley netted a triple and a jumper to cut the Clemson lead down to 56-52 and force the visitors to take a timeout. Unfortunately for the Panthers, they weren't able to get any closer down the stretch as a Walsh runner in the end ended the scoring as Pitt fell 65-59.
Garven finished off her afternoon with nine points, three blocks, two rebounds and two assists across 31 minutes while Cara Judkins netted seven points and four boards in the losing effort.
For the game, the Tigers held the slim 36-33 edge in rebounds while they turned 13 offensive rebounds into 15 second chance points while the Panthers only recorded six second chance points in the loss. Pitt was once again out-scored inside the paint, 30-16, as they drop to 0-8 this season when losing the battle down low.
