PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh women's basketball head coach Lance White announced on Friday afternoon that junior Alayna Gribble has received a medical disqualification from the team due to multiple concussions.
"Alayna Gribble is the epitome of what we look for in a student-athlete and we are heartbroken for her having to give up the game she loves," said White. "She has not only performed at a high level on the basketball court but also off the court as she has represented the city of Pittsburgh and the people in this amazing city in the brightest of lights."
A native of Pittsburgh, Gribble has been a standout on and off the court for the Panthers over the past three seasons. The University of Pittsburgh will honor her scholarship, which includes providing medical care and treatment while Gribble continues to work towards her accounting degree from Pitt.
"Although I can no longer play basketball with my team, I will be on the sidelines cheering them on and providing any insight that I can to help our team be successful," stated Gribble. "I am thankful for the opportunities that basketball has provided me, especially the opportunity to be part of the Pitt Women's Basketball team and the opportunity to attend an amazing university and receive a world class education. To the young basketball players out there: Do not take the game of basketball for granted because you never know when you will play your last game. Embrace all of the opportunities that basketball can provide and appreciate the journey. I am excited for the next chapter of my life. H2P."
Gribble appeared in 52 games over her Pitt career while earning 15 starts for the Panthers. She will conclude her Pitt career accumulating 371 career points and 105 career rebounds while ranking 10th in program history in three-point field goals made with 96. Of her 96 career triples, 46 of them came during her freshman campaign as she ranks second in school history for three-pointers made by a freshman.
The sharpshooter also tied the school record for three-pointers made in a game (seven) on two occasions, Feb. 2, 2017 at Syracuse and Jan. 14, 2018 vs. Georgia Tech. Gribble knocked down at least one triple in 42 of her 52 career games for the Panthers while connecting on five or more threes in four career games.
Over her Pitt career, Gribble scored in double figures 14 times while notching a career-high 29 points in a win over Georgia Tech on Jan. 14, 2018. She finished off her strong game going 9-for-12 from the floor, 7-for-10 from behind the arc while also chipping in with three rebounds off the bench.
"Alayna will focus on her academics and remain a valuable member of our program moving forward," said White. "Being a local product, Alayna has given the people of Pittsburgh a good name and we couldn't be more excited for her as she embarks on endeavors outside of the game of basketball."
Gribble was one of the most decorated local products coming out of Norwin high school as she helped lead her team to back-to-back WPIAL AAAA Girls Basketball championships. The lethal scorer also wrapped up her impressive high school career as the leading scorer in school history as she netted 1,782 career points while earning a McDonald's All-America nomination following her senior season. She was the 2016 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Player of the year while also being named Tribune-Review Player of the Year twice. As a highly-touted high school player, Gribble was ranked as the No. 55 prospect at her position in the nation by ESPN.
Off the basketball court, Gribble is an active member of the Pitt Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), the Delta Sigma Pi Business fraternity and the University of Pittsburgh Accounting Association.
