PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh swimming & diving teams will travel to Division III power Denison for a sprint dual meet on Friday evening in Granville, Ohio.
Coming off an emphatic sweep of the Backyard Brawl against West Virginia two weeks ago, the Panthers will face the Big Red at 4 p.m. – featuring shortened sprint swimming events concurrently with diving events at Denison's Trumbull Aquatics Center.
"We race against Denison every year and this is a meet we really look forward to," Pitt head coach John Hargis said. "It'll be a sprint meet with several 50- and 100-yard events, which will be a lot of fun. Gregg Parini has done a tremendous job with that program; Denison is a powerhouse at the Division III level. The athletes are really excited for this unique format, and it should be a great experience for everyone."
"Friday's meet will be a great opportunity for our divers because they will all attempt the dives that they'll compete at the ACC Championships," Pitt diving coach Katie Hazelton said. "We're in the competitive phase of our season, and we'd like to be sharp with execution of our dives and post some big scores. We're looking forward to testing our championship dives and hoping that the athletes can add NCAA Zone scores to their résumé as we get closer to that time of year."
Last season, Pitt defeated Denison at Trees Pool in a sprint dual meet, with the Panthers winning by a 204-94 margin on the women's side and a decision of 191-101 for the men.
Pitt took first place in 28 of 32 events in last year's meet as returning Panthers Valerie Daigneault, Samy Helmbacher, Shan Hochkeppel and Sam Howe all emerged with numerous victories.
The Panthers and Big Red are scheduled to meet for the sixth consecutive season in swimming & diving as both programs utilize the meet as one of their final tune-ups for the upcoming postseason.
