The Panthers Earned a Win against Wright State while Falling to Ohio State
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The University of Pittsburgh softball team splits its doubleheader in Columbus, Ohio after earning a 2-1 win against Wright State and recording a 6-2 loss to Ohio State Sunday afternoon at Buckeye Field.
"We're always working to win two games a day," said head coach Jodi Hermanek. "Even though we fell short on both wins today, our coaching staff feels Pitt softball continued to make improvements while facing strong competition. Olivia Gray played some amazing defense today to lead the team, and I felt we executed some awesome outs under defensive pressure. As we leave today, we know where to grow."
The Panthers jumped out to an early lead in their game one matchup against Wright State, collecting both of their runs in the opening frame. Freshman Kaytlyn Pavlick opened up the inning with a leadoff double, followed by consecutive walks by senior Olivia Gray and junior Kaitlyn Kruger. Senior Gabrielle Fredericks then stepped to the plate, where she roped a two-RBI single, giving the Panthers a lead they would never relinquish. Freshman Abby Edwards earned the win in the game, combining with junior Brittany Knight to throw a four-hitter against the Raiders.
In game two, it was the Buckeyes who got out to a hot start, putting up five runs in the first two frames. Pitt made a late push in the sixth inning, scoring two runs, but ultimately couldn't muster enough offensive output to catch OSU. Pavlick once again performed well in game two, batting 2-for-2 while adding an RBI. Senior Taylor Myers also recorded an RBI in the matchup while going 1-for-3 at the plate.
Up next, the Panthers will return home for a doubleheader against Saint Francis (PA) Saturday, Sept. 29 starting at 2 p.m. at Vartabedian Field.
