Dawson and Knight Earn Wins in the Doubleheader
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh softball team took both games in its fall ball season-opening doubleheader against Slippery Rock Sunday afternoon at Vartabedian Field in the Petersen Sports Complex.
"I was proud of the attack the team came out with today," said first-year head coach Jodi Hermanek. "Offensively, we put a lot of runners in scoring positions throughout the day. We also did a good job of getting ourselves out of pressure situations defensively. As a team, we did a great job of taking the extra base today, and that has been a big focus in our training. I am pleased that we executed parts of our game that we have been focusing on in practices."
The Panthers earned an 8-1 victory in game one, with senior Sarah Dawson recording the win after an impressive showing. The Bridgewater, Mass., native went five scoreless innings while allowing no hits and striking out eight. At the plate, junior Kaitlyn Kruger went 1-2 while adding a three-run long ball in the second frame. Senior Alexis Solak contributed a 2-3 effort to go along with two runs and a double while freshman Sarah Seamans went 2-2 while adding two runs and two steals.
In game two of today's doubleheader, Pitt took a 5-3 victory after a late push by The Rock. Junior Brittany Knight earned the win in the outing, going 5.2 innings while allowing three hits and one run to go along with three strikeouts. The Windham, Ohio, native also showed her chops at the plate, going 2-2 with a double, home run and two RBIs. Kruger also impressed in game two, adding her second home run of the day while going 1-3 with two RBIs.
Up next, Pitt will travel to Columbus, Ohio, for contests with Wright State and Ohio State Sunday, Sept. 23 beginning at 1:15 p.m.
