SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The No. 14 University of Pittsburgh volleyball team remains perfect after sweeping Seton Hall in its first of two matches Saturday morning in Walsh Gymnasium.
Pitt was solid offensively, posting 50 kills in the match, while holding Seton Hall to just 32.
Sophomore Chinaza Ndee paced the Panthers with 14 kills on 22 attempts to hit .545, while classmate Kayla Lund added 12 to the mix, giving her double-digit kills in every match this season. Junior Layne Van Buskirk was also solid in the contest, tallying 10 kills on 14 attacks to post Pitt's highest hitting percentage of .571.
Senior Kamalani Akeo was the squad's leader in assists, posting 28.
Defensively, Lund picked up her fourth double-double on the year, leading the squad with 11 digs. Redshirt senior Angela Seman dug up 10 balls, while junior Nika Markovic led at the net with three blocks.
Set One: No. 14 Pitt 25, Seton Hall 20
Pitt got off to a solid start in the opening set, finding a 14-11 advantage. However, head coach Dan Fisher was forced to use a timeout as Seton Hall outscored the Panthers 4-1 over the next five points to tie the set at 15 all. The stoppage in play broke down the Pirates momentum, as Seton Hall committed two attacking errors prior to a kill by Lund to give Pitt three consecutive points and an 18-15 lead. The Panthers remained consistent through the set to hold on to win 25-22, despite the Pirates calling two timeouts in the final moments of the set.
Set Two: No. 14 Pitt 25, Seton Hall 18
With the first three points of the second set going to Seton Hall, Pitt utilized its first timeout early on looking to regroup. The Panthers did just that as they racked up five straight points to lead 5-3. In a repeat of the first set, the Pirates called a timeout as they found themselves down by four only to return and match their deficit to tie the score 11-11. Pitt answered with a break of their own but Seton Hall remained competitive, taking a 17-16 lead. Despite the comeback, the Panthers blew the set open in the final points, outscoring the Pirates 8-1 to win 25-18.
Set Three: No. 14 Pitt 25, Seton Hall 21
The final set went Pitt's way as the Panthers closed out the match with a 25-21 victory. Finding a lead and holding on to it was difficult to maintain for both teams, as the score was tied 17 different times throughout the frame.
Van Buskirk gave Pitt a 14-12 lead on back-to-back kills midway through the match, but moments later Seton Hall outscored the Panthers 5-1 to gain a 17-15 lead. From that point, Pitt took advantage of multiple errors by the Pirates and turned on its offense to score 10 of the final 14 points of the match. Van Buskirk guided the Panthers, completing six kills on six attempts to hit perfect in the set.
