PITTSBURGH – After leading the University of Pittsburgh to its first ACC Baseball Tournament, former Panthers from the 2018 season have shown vast improvements throughout the summer as their first year at the professional level nears a close.
Drafted in the 36th round by the Detroit Tigers, pitcher Yaya Chentouf has been solid on the mound for the Short-A Connecticut Tigers since joining the team on June 25. Since his arrival, Chentouf has appeared in 21 games, going 29.2 innings and allowing only six earned runs in that stretch to earn a 1.82 ERA. His performance was noted as he was named to the 2018 New York-Penn All-Star Game, pitching 1.0 innings without allowing a run.
Fellow New York-Penn League competitor RJ Freure has also been untouchable on the mound for the Tri-City ValleyCats. A sixth-round selection of the Houston Astros, Freure has appeared in 10 games for the ValleyCats, starting three of them. Freure has thrown hitters off so far, allowing just three earned runs and striking out 29 in 25.2 innings of work for Tri-City, boasting a 1.05 ERA. Batters seem to be having a hard time figuring out the righty, as they average just .163 off him.
As the eighth-round pick of the Cincinnati Reds, pitcher Matt Pidich has been a key figure in the pitching staff of the rookie ball Billings Mustangs. Appearing in 16 games already this season, Pidich has made 27 batters miss in only 24.2 innings. The righty has had his fair share of impressive outings, including 3.0+ scoreless innings of work on three occasions coming out of the bullpen.
Since being assigned to the Johnson City Cardinals of Rookie ball, Liam Sabino has found his rhythm at the plate. Sabino, who just completed a 12-game hitting streak, raised his batting average to an impressive .339, his on base percentage to .413 and his on-base plus percentage to a 1.043 with Johnson City. With the Cardinals' season completed on Wednesday, the 35th-round pick of the St. Louis Cardinals was a major factor on the team, finishing second in batting average, slugging percentage and on-base plus.
