PITTSBURGH – With a season that stretches throughout the spring, summer and fall months, former University of Pittsburgh players have been getting healthy and returning from the DL to help their teams compete during the postseason push.
A 2015 draft pick of the New York Yankees, former Pitt pitcher Hobie Harris has been lights out for the Advanced-A Tampa Tarpons since returning from the DL on Aug. 3. The righty has made five appearances since his return, pitching in 7.2 innings over that span, racking up nine strike outs and recording one save while allowing only one run.
The 31st round pick has had an impressive season for Tampa, boasting a 2.31 ERA and 1.03 WHIP in 20 appearances with the team. The former Panther has also shown off his control on the mound throughout the course of the year, striking out 44 batters while only walking six through his 34.2 innings pitched with the Tarpons.
Harris has also made appearances over the course of the season with the AA Trenton Thunder and GCL Yankees East. After an impressive start to the season with Tampa, Harris was called up to Trenton, appearing in two games with the Thunder. He would also appear in one game with the GCL Yankees as a part of his rehab assignment, pitching 2.0 innings and striking out two.
Since his short stint on the DL, 2016 alum Nick Yarnall has come back swinging for the Advanced-A Rancho Cucamonga Quakes of the California League. After being activated by the Quakes on July 24, the utility man has played in 12 games, knocking out three home runs in that span and putting up impressive numbers in games, including a 3-for-4 effort with three RBIs on Aug. 2 against the Lake Elsinore Storm.
The 35th round selection of the Los Angeles Dodgers has split time with the Quakes and the Full-A Great Lakes Loons this season, appearing in the first 25 games with the Loons before being called up. While with Great Lakes, Yarnall earned a .343 OBP and was voted the Midwest League's Offensive Player of the Week for the week of April 16-22.
