Former Panthers’ Pitcher Dominating at the Major League Level
PITTSBURGH – Only seven games into his Major League career, former University of Pittsburgh pitcher Ray Black has been a force for opponents to deal with as a member of the San Francisco Giants.
The 2011 draftee has been settling into his new role in the bullpen of AT&T Park since being called up to the MLB July 8, making seven appearances from the pen for the Giants thus far. In those seven outings, Black has gone 6.1 innings, giving up only one hit and striking out eight in the process. Black has also been pitching in some high pressure situations, including a tied game in the ninth inning against cross-bay rival Oakland.
Since his second appearance against the Chicago Cubs July 10, Black has been unhittable to oponents, having not given up a hit in that six appearance stretch and only allowing a baserunner twice.
In his latest outing, Black went 1.0 innings against the Seattle Mariners July 25, striking out one and facing only three batters in the inning. Black has faced the Oakland Athletics four times, going a total of 4.0 innings with five strikeouts and no hits surrendered.
Prior to being called up, Black spent the early part of the season with the AAA Sacramento River Cats and AA Richmond Flying Squirrels. With the River Cats, he appeared in 22 games after being called up May 10, going 21.2 innings and striking out 38 in that stretch to earn a 2-0 record and 2.91 ERA. Starting the year off with the Richmond Flying Squirrels, he threw 10.0 innings in a 10-game stretch, earning a 0.90 ERA and striking out 20.
With San Francisco in the midst of a race for the National League West Pennant, Black is looking to help the Giants compete for the chance to reach in the postseason for the first time since 2016 and the fifth time in the last nine years.
