Panthers Earn the Honor for the First Time since 2008-09
PITTSBURGH – For the first time since 2008-09, the University of Pittsburgh volleyball team earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for the 2017-18 academic year, as announced Monday by the organization.
"I am extremely proud of our team's success on and off the court," said head coach Dan Fisher. "Earning this award is a major achievement for this group and is a big indication of how serious we take academics at the University of Pittsburgh."
One of 164 Division I teams to garner this honor, the Panthers earned a 3.42 team grade-point average (GPA) for the 2017-18 academic year. This marks the fifth time in program history Pitt was awarded the honor and the first since the 2008-09 academic year.
Pitt is one of just five teams from the ACC who earned recognition, joined by Florida State, Louisville, Miami and Virginia Tech.
To receive the honor, teams must maintain at least a 3.30 cumulative team GPA on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale. Universities, colleges and high school teams from all divisions are all eligible.
The AVCA Team Academic Award is the single largest award offered by quantity of schools, players and coaches honored. The number of recipients has risen every year but two since the 2000-2001 season, while amassing a 619-team increase in the last decade. Since its inception in 1993, the number of award winners has increased from 62 to its current number of 973.
