In the summer months, the Cathy and John Pelusi Family Life Skills Program will turn its attention to student-athletes engaged in professional development experiences in various sectors. In this edition of "How I Spent my Summer," Taylor Pryce, a rising redshirt senior on the women's soccer team, talks about her experience as a Health and Life Sciences Intern at Salesforce and how she will use this experience to positively impact her athletic career.
What is your area of study at Pitt and which varsity team(s) do you compete for?
I am a redshirt senior on the women's soccer team. I just graduated in April with a degree in Communications and Rhetoric and a minor in Sociology from the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences. In the fall I will be enrolled in the Katz graduate school of business as a candidate for a Master of Science degree in marketing.
This summer, what organization/department are you working for? What is your official title?
This summer I work for Salesforce at their Toronto office. Salesforce is a cloud computing company and my official title is a Health and Life Sciences Sales Intern. I work with the Health and Life Sciences enterprise select team.
What are some of your day-to-day responsibilities?
My primary responsibility is to support the enterprise select team, who work with businesses who have 4,500 to 15,000 employees. The department sells software which enables companies, in this case those in healthcare, to collaborate across entire ecosystems.
Some of my day-to-day responsibilities include: creating a daily pipe generation report in order for the sales team to better understand where they are in terms of reaching their target, identify who the 'hot' accounts are and their respective top opportunities.
I do a lot of research on hospitals and companies in the healthcare industry. This research includes analyzing companies' calls to action, their fiscal year reports and earnings calls. From this, I take what I believe to be key pieces of information and pitch it back to the sales team. For example I could say that company 'x' has a strong belief in providing excellent customer service. I believe that they would be a good fit for sales force because they can utilize our sales cloud software in order to connect better with their customers. The team takes the information that I provided them into meetings with their prospective customer.
How do you think being a Pitt student-athlete has prepared you for your current role?
Being a Pitt student-athlete has taught me a lot of the soft skills that those who don't have an athletic or team background learn. Some of those soft skills include being a team player, time management and a drive to want to be the best.
I would not have had the opportunity to work for sales force if it wasn't for my previous background. I worked for the Pittsburgh Pirates last summer as a Sales and Services Intern, and I thank Pitt for that initial experience. I met my first employer at my first Career Networking Night event at Pitt, which has prepared me for more opportunities down the line through the connections that I have made.
Our Life Skills program has also taught me a lot about working in a professional environment. The Professional Etiquette Training series prepared me a lot for this role. In the first one-on-one I had with my current manager, he told me to meet as many people as I can in this office. My first week, I found myself reciting my elevator pitch (in an elevator) with about four other people I had never met before. But, I was confident in my ability to network because I have had thorough training.
The etiquette series also provided me with the knowledge on what to wear to certain types of meetings, whether they be formal, informal, or out-of-office.
What are some of your career goals following Pitt?
After Pitt, if my body allows me to, I would like to spend some time playing professional soccer. This will allow me the chance to travel, and explore new cultures while doing what I love. When I do start a career, I would like to be in sales, hopefully one day be an account executive. These goals are all while I plan my own business venture. Owning my own business would be my ultimate goal.
What skills learned this summer will you use to impact your athletic career?
This summer the biggest thing that I have learned is to put yourself out there. Who cares if you mess up? If you fall on your face, at least you can say you tried and you can learn from the experience. By putting yourself in new situations, it will only deepen your relationships because it will open the door to feedback. I will use this to better connect with my teammates. This can be as simple as reaching out to a teammate I don't talk to as often to build that relationship further.
