Panthers Edged by No. 7 Clemson, 4-1 Pitt to Celebrate Senior Day Saturday at Cost Field
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh baseball team dropped game two to No. 7 Clemson on Friday afternoon, 4-1 at Charles L. Cost Field.
"We struggled getting through that first inning," said head coach Joe Jordano. "Dan [Hammer] had a little bit of control problems. They scored a couple runs and we walked one in, but then he [Hammer] settled down and did a good job for us. We had some opportunities offensively. We cashed in with a two-out RBI with [Nick] Banman, but couldn't create much more offense than that. We played well defensively, it was just a baseball game where we came up a little short."
Clemson (42-13, 21-8 ACC) jumped out to a quick lead in the first inning, going up 3-0 on Pitt (27-24, 11-18 ACC) after a series of walks loaded things up.
The Panthers were able to chip away at the lead in the fourth inning, scoring a run to cut the Tigers lead to two. After Liam Sabino doubled to left center, Nick Banman singled up the middle to bring Sabino home and put the Panthers on the board.
Clemson added a run in the eighth off of a solo homer, giving the Tigers a 4-1 lead that they would not surrender.
Dan Hammer (2-5) earned the loss, giving up two hits, three runs and four walks while striking out four across 5.0 innings of work. Derek West was solid in two innings of relief, giving up just one hit and striking out two. Yasin Chentouf finished up the game for the Panthers, pitching the final two frames while allowing one run off of two hits and striking out three.
Offensively, Chris Cappas finished the afternoon 2-3, while Sabino went 1-3. Banman had the Panthers' sole RBI of the game, going 2-4.
The Panthers and Tigers will wrap up the regular season tomorrow afternoon, with first pitch set for 1 p.m. Pitt will celebrate Senior Day prior to first pitch, honoring seniors Nick Banman, Frank Maldonado, TJ Pagan, Caleb Parry and Matt Pidich as well as senior manager Max Glasser.
