PITTSBURGH--Three University of Pittsburgh intercollegiate athletic programs earned NCAA Public Recognition Awards for exemplary Academic Progress Rates (APR): women's cross country, women's softball and women's tennis. All three programs received perfect APR scores of 1,000.
"We are extremely proud of our women's cross country, softball and women's tennis programs for their outstanding achievement in APR," Pitt Director of Athletics Heather Lyke said. "Our student-athletes are highly motivated and continue to receive tremendous support from the coaches and staff at the University of Pittsburgh. I am excited about the environment of academic excellence we are building and look forward to seeing our number of APR Public Recognition Awards grow in the future."
The awards are presented each year to teams finishing among the top 10 percent of their respective sport based on the most recent multi-year APR. The three teams honored are tied for the second-highest number of NCAA Public Recognition Awards in a single year. The Panthers now have 22 teams recognized in the 13 years since the APR has been tracked.
All three programs also received APR Public Recognition a year ago. Women's Tennis has been honored six times overall, including each of the past four years, while women's cross country and women's softball received the accolade for the second time each.
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester or quarter by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete. The APR includes eligibility, retention and graduation in the calculation and provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport.
