Panthers Take One of Three Against Seminoles.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The University of Pittsburgh softball team dropped its series finale to No. 13/9 Florida State, 8-0, Sunday afternoon at JoAnne Graf Field.
The Seminoles [33-7, 11-1 ACC] took two of three against the Panthers [20-15-1, 9-5 ACC], marking Pitt's first Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) series loss of the season.
Though the Panthers dropped the series to FSU, they were still able to hand the Seminoles their first ACC loss of the season with a 1-0 extra-inning victory Friday night. The loss snapped Florida State's 36-game conference win streak, which dated back to the 2016 season and was the fifth longest streak in NCAA history.
"Despite getting on the wrong side of things today, we did a lot of good things this weekend," said head coach Holly Aprile. "We battled at the plate against two of the best pitchers, not only in the ACC, but in the country. We also made some great defensive plays, particularly in our win. We will make our adjustments this week in practice and be ready for Georgia Tech next weekend."
Junior Sarah Dawson earned the start for the Panthers in game three, though an offensive eruption by the Seminoles in the second inning led to the junior being pulled early after giving up six runs in 1.2 innings of action. Junior Taylor Rahach earned three innings of relief work to close out the game, surrendering three hits and two runs.
Offensively, Pitt finished the game with three hits at the plate. Senior Giorgiana Zeremenko, junior Alexis Solak and freshman Hunter Levesque all added one hit apiece for the Panthers.
Scoring Summary: Florida State 8, Pitt 0 (5)
The Seminoles used a six-run second inning to break open the game. Florida State opened the inning with a leadoff double, followed by a base-hit bunt that led to runners at second and third. Another bunt by the Seminoles scored the first run of the game. Florida State followed that with a two-RBI single to make it 3-0 before a three run blast pushed the Seminoles lead to 6-0.
Florida State added another run in the third inning after a bases loaded fielder's choice made it 7-0.
In the fifth inning, an RBI-single gave the Seminoles their eighth run of the day, enacting the run rule and ending the game.
