RALEIGH, N.C. – The University of Pittsburgh softball team fell to NC State in its ACC opener, 7-0, Friday evening at Dail Softball Stadium in Raleigh, N.C.
The Panthers move to 8-6-1 on the season and 0-1 in conference play, while the Wolfpack improve to 12-5-1 overall and 1-0 in ACC action.
Pitt played well throughout the first four innings of the game, as junior starting pitcher Sarah Dawson and the defense held NC State to just three hits. The Panthers defense was on point early in the game, turning a line drive double play in the second inning, while senior catcher Giorgiana Zeremenko caught a runner stealing in the same series that Dawson struck out a girl swinging.
It wasn't until the fifth inning that NC State put runs on the board, tallying the first of four on an RBI-single by Jade Caraway. A three-run homer curtesy of Timberlyn Shurbutt made it 4-0 at the end of frame.
The Wolfpack extended their lead in the sixth to 7-0 on another long ball by Chandley Garner.
Pitt left six baserunners stranded throughout the game, unable to push any across home plate.
Zeremenko finished the game 2-for-3, while freshman Hunter Levesque and junior Marissa DeMatteo tallied the Panthers' other two hits.
Dawson tossed five innings while giving up six hits, including a three-run homer, four runs and three walks. Sophomore Brittany Knight relieved Dawson in the sixth, giving up the second home run.
