Panthers Develop Professional Communication Skills

Junior and Senior student-athletes developed their professional communication skills at the Business Communication and Networking Workshop on Monday March 12th. Part of the Professional Etiquette Training Series, the workshop gave student-athletes the opportunity to hone a range of communication skills that are key to professional success.
"Tonight was an engaging workshop for our student-athletes, where they were able to see how the smallest parts of how you present yourself can make an incredible difference in how you are perceived, and in your professional brand," said Jackson Martin, Director of Life Skills. "Whether in the digital space, or meeting professionals in-person, the details are often what separate a good impression from a great one, and our student-athletes were able to understand and develop some of those details tonight."
The workshop was divided into two primary areas of focus, non-verbal and verbal communication. Assistant Athletic Director for Student Life, Lisa Auld, and Assistant Athletic Director of Varsity Letter Club and Mentorship, Lousaka Polite, worked with student-athletes on the keys to a strong introduction, including how to execute a solid handshake and how to master your 30-second elevator pitch. Martin provided a unique focus on student-athletes' digital footprint, and how employers and other professionals use social media as a part of both the hiring process and part of how they develop their professional social networks.
"Tonight's workshop was interactive and fun while being really informational," said Track and Field student-athlete Andin Fosam. "For someone who isn't huge on social media, Jackson made me aware of how easily accessible old posts are and how they can potentially be used against you. I really enjoyed practicing my elevator pitch with Lisa and Lousaka as well. I'm incredibly excited for the final workshop!"
The Business Communication and Networking Workshop is the second program in the three-part Professional Etiquette Training Series, designed to provide student-athletes with unique skillsets. With workshop focuses on professional dress, communication and networking skills, and dining etiquette, the series provides Pitt junior and senior student-athletes with enhanced professional skills as they enter the internship, graduate school and career search process.
Initiated in 1995 as one of the pilot programs of the NCAA's Student-Athlete Affairs Life Skills Program, the Cathy and John Pelusi Family Life Skills Program is committed to providing student-athletes an opportunity to prepare for success academically, athletically, and in their personal growth and development.
