Pitt Falls to Wake Forest in ACC Tournament First Round, 72-38

Diop Leads Panthers with 18 Points, Seven Rebounds
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Redshirt junior Yacine Diop led Pitt (10-20, 2-14 ACC) with 18 points and seven rebounds as No. 11 seed Wake Forest (14-16, 5-11 ACC) eliminated the 14th-seeded Panthers from the first round of the 2018 ACC Women's Basketball Tournament, 72-38, at Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, N.C.
Diop was one of two double-figure scorers for Pitt, along with sophomore Alayna Gribble (11). Three other Panthers reached the scoring column: Danielle Garven (four points), Cassidy Walsh (three points) and Kauai Bradley (two points).
Wake Forest shot 50.0 percent (28-of-56) from the floor compared to Pitt's 27.8 percent (15-of-54). The Demon Deacons had the advantage on the boards (39-30) and outscored the Panthers 40-6 in the paint.
A 7-0 run midway through the first quarter gave the Demon Deacons an early 12-4 lead (4:22). Wake Forest led by as many as nine (19-10) in the first 10 minutes, ending the period on a 3-pointer from Alex Sharp with 45 seconds remaining. Garven scored all four of her points in the stanza to pace the Panthers.
Pitt cut its deficit to as few as four points (24-20) after outscoring Wake Forest 11-5 over the first five minutes of the second quarter. However, the Demon Deacons responded with an 8-2 run of their own to end the half, heading into the locker room with a 32-22 advantage. Diop led the Panthers with 12 points for the half.
The third quarter proved to be Pitt's downfall as Wake Forest ended the period on a 16-2 run and ultimately outscored the Panthers 25-5 for the quarter. Pitt's only points came from a Walsh 3-pointer (39-25, 7:28) and a Diop jumper (49-27, 3:51).
The Panthers kept pace with the Demon Deacons through the first five minutes of the fourth quarter, but a 6-0 run from 5:00 to 2:32 staved off Pitt. Ultimately, Wake Forest came away with a 72-38 victory.
