Panthers to Play Five Games at Ambrose Urbanic Field
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh men's soccer team is set to play six spring games in 2018, head coach Jay Vidovich announced Friday.
The Panthers will play five home games at Ambrose Urbanic Field in the Petersen Sports Complex and will play one road game.
"We look forward for the opportunity to play against some quality competition this spring," Vidovich said. "We've been away from match play for way too long, and our opponents will give us a good test. I expect that these games will show us how much work we have to do to prepare for the 2018 fall season."
Pitt will open the spring season with a home game against the local Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the United Soccer League Friday, March 2 at 7 p.m. This will serve as a preseason contest for the Riverhounds. Former Pitt goalkeeper Dan Lynd has seen action this preseason for the Riverhounds as the squad is 3-0 thus far.
The Panthers will then host Sigma FC, a top Canadian club of League 1 Ontario, Friday, March 16 at 7 p.m. Sigma FC has produced numerous Division I athletes who went professional in the sport.
Pitt then takes on Michigan at home on Saturday, March 24 at 11 a.m. The Wolverines advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament last season before falling to Colgate. Michigan finished the season with a 12-6-2 record, including a 6-1-1 mark in the Big Ten conference. The Wolverines finished the year ranked No. 22 in the United Soccer Coaches poll and in the final RPI.
The Panthers will then host cross-town foe Duquesne Thursday, March 29 at 7 p.m. A consistent preseason opponent, the Dukes ended last season 3-13-1, with a 1-7 conference record.
Pitt's lone road trip of the spring will be in College Park, Md., to face Maryland Saturday, April 7 at 1 p.m. at Ludwig Field. The Terrapins finished the 2017 season 10-5-4 overall and 5-1-2 in the Big Ten. Maryland fell to Albany in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament and finished at No. 26 in the RPI.
The Panthers' spring season will conclude with a home match, as Penn State visits Pitt Saturday, April 14 at 11 a.m. The Panthers defeated the Nittany Lions 3-2 in overtime a year ago at Ambrose Urbanic Field. Penn State went on to finish the season with a 5-10-2 overall record, with a 2-6 mark in Big Ten play.
All home games are free and open to the public.
Pitt finished the 2017 season with a record of 8-10 overall, including a 2-6 mark against ACC foes. The Panthers defeated three ranked teams on the year in No. 7 Notre Dame, No. 13 Columbia, and No. 21 Syracuse. The victory over the Orange on Sept. 29 was the first conference win for Pitt since moving into the ACC at the start of the 2013 season, and they would add their second conference win against the Fighting Irish on Oct. 13.
