Three Panthers Reach Double Figures in 77-66 Loss to No. 21/22 NC State

Diop, Whitney, Walters Each Score 15 or More Points in Loss to Wolfpack
PITTSBURGH – Three Panthers recorded double-digit scoring outputs for Pitt women's basketball (10-18, 2-13 ACC) in a 77-66 loss to No. 21/22 NC State (22-6, 11-4 ACC) in their final home game of the season Thursday night at Petersen Events Center.
Redshirt junior Yacine Diop scored 20 points on 9-of-17 shooting to go along with four rebounds, two assists and two blocks. Sophomore Jasmine Whitney recorded 15 points on 6-of-13 shooting, while adding seven assists and three steals, with her seven assists being one off her season high. Junior Kalista Walters rounded out the trio with 15 points on a near-perfect 6-of-7 shooting night.
The Panthers shot 52.9 percent from the field in the game, their best shooting mark since Dec. 31, 2017, when they hit 57.4 percent in a win against Chicago State. The Wolfpack connected on 22 of their 52 shots (42.3 percent), but produced a strong showing from the free throw line. NC State ended the night going 28-of-33 (84.8 percent) from the charity stripe, compared to Pitt's 7-of-13 (53.8 percent) output. The Wolfpack also held a strong edge on the boards, outrebounding the Panthers 37-21 overall and 13-2 on the offensive glass.
Diop got the Panthers off to a hot start in the first quarter, scoring 12 consecutive points over a two-minute stretch to give Pitt a 16-8 lead at the 5:45 mark. The Panthers took their largest lead of the game at the 4:09 mark in the first quarter, after Whitney hit a jumper to put the score at 21-12. The Wolfpack answered with a 10-2 run to finish the quarter, giving Pitt just a 23-22 advantage after one.
NC State went ahead 26-25 at the 8:17 mark in the second quarter after a Kaila Ealey free throw, never relinquishing the lead after that point. A three-pointer by junior Cassidy Walsh cut the Wolfpack lead to just three with under four minutes remaining in the second period, but NC State answered back with a 11-2 run to head into the half with a 46-34 lead.
Pitt started the third quarter with a 10-2 run to cut the Wolfpack lead to 48-44 at the 6:38 mark. The Panthers then went scoreless after a layup by Walters with 3:17 left in the quarter, allowing NC State to go on a 7-0 run to end the third with a 61-49 advantage.
The Wolfpack held onto a comfortable lead throughout the final quarter. The Panthers made a last ditch effort near the end of the fourth, using a 5-0 run to cut NC State's lead to 68-60, but the Wolfpack ultimately prevailed with a 77-66 victory.
