Fundraising to Support Transformation of Academic Support Center
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh Athletics Department has announced the Willis Academic Center Enhancement Fund, aimed at transforming the Hilda M. Willis Academic Center for student-athletes.
"We are always looking at ways to enhance the educational experience of our student-athletes here at Pitt," Director of Athletics Heather Lyke said. "The Willis Academic Center Enhancement Fund will allow us to transform our academic center and enhance the learning space that will enable our student-athletes to continue to achieve at the highest levels."
Donors and fans are encouraged to give their support starting on the annual Pitt Day of Giving, Wednesday, Feb. 28.
All 19 varsity teams at the University of Pittsburgh, including football, utilize the Willis Academic Center, which is housed at Petersen Events Center on campus in Oakland. Approximately 70 undergraduate and graduate tutors assist student-athletes across the entire range of courses offered at the University of Pittsburgh.
By giving to the Willis Academic Enhancement Fund, donors will help provide an interactive, collaborative, versatile learning space that will give Pitt student-athletes the competitive edge they need to succeed in the classroom. It is the mission of the Willis Academic Center to provide extraordinary experiences for student-athletes, giving them a foundation for success beyond their college careers.
"An enhanced Willis Academic Center will provide our student-athletes with the additional resources they need to compete in the classroom on a daily basis," Director of Academic Support Services Mike Farabaugh said. "The foundation of success for our approximately 475 student-athletes begins with the Willis Academic Center and extends to their interaction with the outstanding faculty at the University of Pittsburgh. I can't think of a better way for someone to contribute to the long term success of our student-athletes."
In the 2017 calendar year, Pitt honored 408 of 475 total student-athletes as "scholar athletes" – which are those who achieved a 3.0 or greater GPA in at least one term. Twenty-eight of the 408 had a 4.0 in at least one term. This is a six percent increase over the previous year and marks the highest number in university history.
