Sophomore Class Leads Panthers in Scoring Column
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Sophomore guards Alayna Gribble and Jasmine Whitney led Pitt women's basketball (10-16, 2-11 ACC) with 17 and 14 points, respectively, in an 82-58 road loss at (RV/RV) Miami (18-8, 8-5 ACC) Thursday night at Watsco Center.
The game marked Gribble's third time leading the Panthers in scoring this season. She ended the game making 6-of-8 from the field, 4-of-5 from 3-point range and 1-of-2 from the free throw line. Whitney made 5-of-14 from the floor and 4-of-5 from the charity stripe. Junior center Kalista Walters was a perfect 4-of-4 on the day with eight points and added a team-high five rebounds.
For their second consecutive game, the Panthers posted 20 points in the first quarter, but it wasn't enough as the Hurricanes had 27. Gribble hit three triples and a jumper in the stanza to lead the Panthers with 11 points.
Pitt outscored Miami 7-2 over the first four minutes of the second quarter to make it a two-point game (29-27) at 6:37, following Gribble's fourth 3-pointer. She started the game making 4-of-4 from long range. Following that triple, the Hurricanes outscored Pitt 18-8 for the remainder of the quarter, leading by as many as 17 (48-31) with under a minute left in the half. Whitney scored four points in the final 35 seconds to make it 48-35 at halftime.
The Hurricanes pushed their lead to as many as 22 points in the third quarter, following a layup by 6-foot-6 center Serena-Lynn Geldof at 2:29 (65-43). The Panthers clawed back to make it a 19-point game (67-48) entering the final quarter, outscoring Miami 5-2 over the last two minutes with all points coming on free throws.
Miami ended the game on a 10-4 run to ultimately down the Panthers, 82-57.
